How to backflush an espresso machine with detergent

A detergent backflush dissolves the coffee oils that water alone leaves behind. Done at the right cadence it keeps shots tasting clean; done too often on an E61 group it strips lubrication and wears gaskets, so frequency matters as much as technique.

What you need

How to do it

  1. Insert a blind filter into your portafilter
  2. Add up to 3g (½ teaspoon) of Cafiza or similar detergent
  3. Lock the portafilter into the group
  4. Activate brew for 10s, stop 10s, repeat 5 times
  5. Remove portafilter and rinse under running water
  6. Reinsert without detergent and run 5 more cycles of 10s on/off
  7. Pull one blank shot to flush out any residue

HEADS UP

Use only espresso-specific detergent. On E61 machines, no more than every 6 weeks; more often damages the gaskets.

How often?

Recommended cadence by machine type, from the maintenance data behind the Espremo app:

Machine typeFrequency
E61 HXEvery 6 weeks
E61 Dual BoilerEvery 6 weeks
Non-E61 Dual BoilerEvery 2 weeks
Single BoilerMonthly

Machines that run their own cleaning cycle (like the Breville Oracle series) handle some of this automatically — cadence also shifts with water hardness and daily shot volume.
