How to descale an espresso machine
Scale is the number-one killer of espresso machines: it narrows waterways, buries heating elements and seizes valves. If your machine has no filter and your water is hard, descaling on schedule is not optional. Note that some manufacturers advise filtered water instead of descaling — check before you start.
What you need
- Descaler (citric-acid based recommended)
- Large container
- Clean water for rinsing
How to do it
- Remove the water filter from the reservoir
- Fill the reservoir with descaling solution per the bottle's instructions
- Place a large container under the group head and steam wand
- Run one cup of solution through the group head and a quarter cup through the steam wand
- Switch off and let it sit for 20 minutes
- Repeat until the reservoir is empty
- Fill the reservoir with clean water and flush completely, at least 2 full tanks
- Pull a blank shot and taste whether the water is neutral
- Put the water filter back
Tips from the bench
Collected from manufacturer guidance and years of home-barista forum wisdom:
- The soak is the descale. Let the solution sit 15 to 30 minutes in contact with the scale; a straight pass-through removes only a fraction.
- Citric acid baseline: about one teaspoon (4-5 g) per litre. Aluminium boilers want a weaker mix and extra rinses; pitted boilers are not a warranty case.
- Rinse with at least two full tanks, until the water smells and tastes of nothing. Any tang means keep rinsing.
- Skip vinegar. It is weaker against limescale than citric acid, needs four times the rinsing, and ages your gaskets.
- Discard the first two or three shots afterwards. Trace acid residue will find them.
Remove the water filter first. Descaler will damage it. NEVER use vinegar.
How often?
Recommended cadence by machine type, from the maintenance data behind the Espremo app:
| Machine type | Frequency |
|---|---|
| E61 HX | Depends on water and filter type |
| E61 Dual Boiler | Depends on water and filter type |
| Non-E61 Dual Boiler | Depends on water and filter type |
| Single Boiler | Depends on water and filter type |
| Lever | Depends on water and filter type |
Machines that run their own cleaning cycle (like the Breville Oracle series) handle some of this automatically — cadence also shifts with water hardness and daily shot volume.
