How to replace an espresso group gasket
When you have to muscle the portafilter far past its normal position to stop leaks, the group gasket has hardened. Replacing it is a ten-minute job that instantly restores a snug, centred lock.
What you need
- New group gasket (machine-specific)
- Gasket tool or flat screwdriver
- Clean cloth
How to do it
- Switch off the machine and let it cool
- Remove the shower screen and old gasket using a gasket tool or a flat screwdriver
- Clean the groove where the gasket sits thoroughly
- Install the new gasket with the rounded side facing up (E61)
- Place the shower screen back on top of the gasket
- Lock an empty portafilter (without basket) to seat the gasket evenly
Tips from the bench
Collected from manufacturer guidance and years of home-barista forum wisdom:
- A hardened gasket rarely comes out whole. Pierce it with a small flathead or an o-ring pick at the 3 or 9 o'clock position and lever it out in chunks. Patience beats force: small moves, all the way around.
- The corkscrew trick: gently twist a corkscrew or coarse screw into the rubber and pull. It gives you a handle on a gasket with nothing left to grip.
- Soften a stubborn one first: run the group hot for a few minutes, or flush hot water over it. Warm rubber releases easier.
- Before the new gasket goes in, clean the seat spotless and smear a whisper of food-safe lube on the outer edge only. That is what makes the next replacement a two-minute job.
- Tight fit on install? The freezer trick: gasket and screen overnight in the freezer shrinks them just enough to click in.
Gasket the wrong way around = leaks. Rounded side up on E61 machines.
How often?
Recommended cadence by machine type, from the maintenance data behind the Espremo app:
| Machine type | Frequency |
|---|---|
| E61 HXOptional | Yearly |
| E61 Dual BoilerOptional | Yearly |
| Non-E61 Dual BoilerOptional | Every 15 months |
| Single BoilerOptional | Every 15 months |
Machines that run their own cleaning cycle (like the Breville Oracle series) handle some of this automatically — cadence also shifts with water hardness and daily shot volume.
