How to replace a portafilter gasket
A portafilter that suddenly needs to be locked in well past centre, or that weeps around the rim mid-shot, is telling you its gasket has hardened. This is the simplest gasket job on the machine.
What you need
- New portafilter gasket
How to do it
- Remove the old gasket
- Clean the groove
- Install the new gasket
- Test by locking the portafilter. It should sit smoothly but firmly
Tips from the bench
Collected from manufacturer guidance and years of home-barista forum wisdom:
- Pick the old gasket out from the spout side with a small screwdriver; note whether a shim sits behind it, and keep the order.
- Warm the new gasket in hot water for a minute; flexible rubber seats evenly instead of pinching.
- Lock in a (clean, empty) portafilter overnight after the swap. It helps the new gasket take its seat.
Too thin and it leaks; too thick and the portafilter won't lock properly.
How often?
Recommended cadence by machine type, from the maintenance data behind the Espremo app:
| Machine type | Frequency |
|---|---|
| LeverOptional | Yearly |
Machines that run their own cleaning cycle (like the Breville Oracle series) handle some of this automatically — cadence also shifts with water hardness and daily shot volume.
