Espresso grinder burr replacement: intervals and warning signs

Burr wear is invisible by design: it happens a fraction of a gram at a time, and your palate adjusts along with it. Burr geometry is having a moment — April Coffee's first hand grinder funded on Kickstarter in about four hours this week, built with Timemore around a custom 48 mm conical set designed for a target particle distribution — but even the newest technology does not solve the wear question: grind-by-weight grinders weigh your dose in real time, while the cumulative kilos through the burrs remain a ledger you keep yourself.

The warning signs of dull burrs

But rule these out first

SymptomCould be dull burrsCould also be
Shots run faster at the same settingYesStale beans, seasonal humidity drop
Clumpy, fluffy groundsYesOils and fines packed in the burr chamber — clean first
Channelling despite careful prepYesClogged shower screen, worn gasket
Grind drifts one direction over monthsYesBurr alignment shifted — uneven wear both mimics and accelerates dulling

The honest sequence is: clean the burrs, re-taste, then judge. Coffee oils gone rancid deep in the chamber mimic dull burrs almost perfectly, and cleaning is free.

How long do burrs actually last?

Burr typeIndicative lifespanConfidence
Flat steel, small (≤58 mm)250–400 kgManufacturer guidance, consistent
Flat steel, large (64–83 mm)400–1,000 kgManufacturer guidance, varies by maker
Conical steel (incl. 48 mm hand grinders)500–1,000 kgManufacturer guidance, less published data
Coated (TiN and similar)2–4× the steel equivalentManufacturer claims, little independent testing

Those numbers explain why cafés replace burrs yearly — and why home users almost never hit them: at a prosumer pace of 3–5 shots a day (~26 g), a year is only about 9–10 kg. Grind 18 g twice a day and reaching even a 300 kg floor takes over twenty years.

So at home, watch age instead of kilos

The practical constraints at home are different: cutting edges corrode, old oils go rancid, alignment drifts and wears one side of the set faster. That is why the Espremo app's defaults treat the two jobs separately: clean the burrs roughly every 8 weeks, and assess replacement around every 2 years, tuned to your burr type and daily volume — with the warning signs above overriding the calendar in both directions. A tip that costs nothing today: photograph your burrs while they are new, so future-you has a reference to compare edges against.

Keep the ledger without keeping a ledger

Nobody remembers when their burrs went in. A maintenance app does — set it once and the reminder arrives in the right season, not three years late. See the full maintenance schedule for everything else that is quietly due.

Frequently asked questions

How long do espresso grinder burrs last?

Manufacturer guidance clusters around 250–600 kg for smaller flat steel burrs, more for large flats and conicals, and a multiple of that for coated sets. At home volumes that is many years — age, corrosion and cleaning usually matter before kilos do.

What are the signs of dull grinder burrs?

Fluffy, clumpy grounds; grinding ever finer to hold the same shot time; more fines and channelling; dialling in new beans taking far more throws than it used to.

Can dirty burrs feel like worn burrs?

Yes — rancid oils and packed fines mimic dullness almost perfectly. Clean the burrs first and re-taste before you spend money on a new set.

Is it worth replacing burrs or should I buy a new grinder?

Burr sets typically run €30–150 depending on size and coating. If the set costs more than roughly a third of the grinder's replacement value, or the motor and alignment are also tired, a new grinder is often the better buy.
