Espresso machines with automatic cleaning: what they handle and what you still do
"The machine cleans itself" is having a marketing moment: La Cimbali's new Supera platform, launched this week, leads with automatic cleaning as a headline feature. It is a commercial machine, but home buyers read the claim as broader than it is: on every espresso machine ever sold, "automatic cleaning" covers some tasks and quietly leaves the rest to you.
What "automatic cleaning" can mean
On a spec sheet the phrase covers three different things, and machines rarely have all three: an automated backflush or clean cycle (the machine runs the flush, you insert the disc and tablet), a milk-circuit rinse (superautomatics and steam-wand auto-purge), and a descale prompt (the machine counts usage and tells you when — you still run the cycle).
What the cycles genuinely replace
A prompted clean cycle really does replace the manual detergent backflush, and a descale prompt replaces remembering the date. That is genuinely useful — it covers the two most-forgotten tasks. Espremo treats it that way in its own schedule: machines that handle a task themselves get that reminder quietly skipped.
What no machine replaces
The wear parts have no cycle. Shower screens clog and deform, group gaskets harden, burrs dull, and water filters exhaust — on a Breville Oracle exactly as on a hand-built E61. No consumer machine replaces a part for you, and none tracks the age of parts it did not know were changed.
Machine by machine
From the maintenance data behind the Espremo app — every model in our catalogue that automates at least one task:

| Breville Oracle (BES980) | Descale cycle (prompted), Clean / backflush cycle, Water filter prompt | Shower screen, group gasket, burr care |
| Breville Oracle Touch (BES990) | Descale cycle (prompted), Clean / backflush cycle, Water filter prompt | Shower screen, group gasket, burr care |

| Breville Barista Express | Descale cycle (prompted), Clean / backflush cycle | Shower screen, group gasket, burr care, water filter |
| Breville Barista Pro | Descale cycle (prompted), Clean / backflush cycle | Shower screen, group gasket, burr care, water filter |
| Breville Barista Touch | Descale cycle (prompted), Clean / backflush cycle | Shower screen, group gasket, burr care, water filter |

| Sage Bambino Plus / Barista Express | Descale cycle (prompted) | Shower screen, group gasket, burr care, water filter |
Superautomatics (Jura, De'Longhi and similar) sit one step further along: the brew group rinses itself and the milk circuit runs a cleaning program, but the group still needs periodic manual cleaning or service, and descaling follows the same water-hardness logic as everything else. Machines with no automation at all — E61 groups, levers, most dual boilers — simply run the full manual schedule.
The descale prompt does not know your water
Prompts count litres or shots. Your water contributes the other variable: the same machine that can wait months on soft water needs a much shorter interval on hard water — roughly the difference between 70 and 320 ppm as CaCO₃. Treat the prompt as a lower bound on attention, not an upper bound.
Building a schedule when half the tasks are automated
The practical method: list what your machine truly automates (the table above), strike those, and put the rest on a cadence. That subtraction is exactly what Espremo does during onboarding — pick a Breville Oracle and the descale, clean-cycle and filter reminders never appear, while the screen, gasket and burr reminders do. The claim is checkable in the app's own machine catalogue.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Breville Oracle clean itself?
Partly. The Oracle prompts and runs its own descale and clean cycles and reminds you about the water filter. Shower screen care, gasket replacement and grinder burr maintenance remain manual, like on any machine.
Do superautomatics need descaling?
Yes, unless they run an appropriate water filter that the manufacturer says replaces descaling. The machine's prompt counts litres or shots, not your water hardness, so on hard water the real interval can be shorter than the prompt.
Does a water filter mean I never have to descale?
On some machines, per the manufacturer, yes: Lelit for instance points Bianca owners to filtered water instead of descaling. On most machines a filter stretches the interval rather than removing the task, and the filter itself becomes a scheduled replacement.
What does automatic cleaning never cover?
The wear parts: shower screen, group gasket, portafilter gasket and grinder burrs. No consumer machine on the market replaces those for you or tracks their age.
